What does "15-free" mean and why is it important?

What prompted me to write this post?
More and more consumers find it important to choose products that are safer for their personal health and for the environment. Yes, you're right, 100% safety doesn't exist, and yes, Manifix products are not organic. However, with the "15free" label, Manifix is taking an important step and demonstrating responsibility to produce in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable way. "15free" means that certain harmful chemicals are not contained in a product.
Manifix products are "15free".
I have briefly summarized for you which chemicals Manifix avoids. I am not a chemist; this information is based on internet research. For me, it is particularly important to know exactly what I am using, and perhaps it is for you too!
Chemicals that Manifix avoids.
- Phthalates
Phthalates are plasticizers that make plastics more flexible and elastic. They are also found in cosmetics and personal care products. Some of these substances are suspected of causing hormonal disorders.
- Toluene
Toluene is a colorless liquid often used as a solvent in paints, varnishes, and adhesives. It is also used in cosmetics such as nail polishes and nail glues. Toluene fumes can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, and, in high concentrations, nerve damage.
- Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is a colorless gas used in many industrial processes and products. It has a very pungent odor. It is used in the production of disinfectants, preservatives, and for hardening nail care products. It is considered carcinogenic and can lead to severe irritation and respiratory problems.
- Camphor
Camphor is often used in ointments and medicinal products, but also in nail polishes. It is an organic compound with an intense smell. In high concentrations, it can be irritating.
- Formaldehyde resins
Formaldehyde resins are synthetic resins that contain formaldehyde. They are used in nail care for nail hardening. They can cause skin irritation and may be carcinogenic.
- Xylenes
Xylenes are solvents used in paints, varnishes, and sometimes in cosmetic products like nail polishes. Health risks include skin irritation, respiratory problems, and, with prolonged contact, it can affect the nervous system.
- Parabens
Parabens are preservatives. They prevent microbes from developing in cosmetic products. They are suspected of causing hormonal changes.
- Silicones
Silicones are synthetic substances, e.g., in hair and skin care products, that create a smooth and soft feel. They can seal hair and skin, thus preventing nutrients from penetrating. Furthermore, they can harm the environment because they are poorly biodegradable.
- AOX (Adsorbable organically bound halogens)
AOX are organic compounds that contain chlorine, bromine, or iodine. In cosmetic products, they can occur as residues. They are difficult for nature to degrade and are suspected of harming our health.
- Microplastics
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles often used in scrubs, toothpastes, and other cosmetics. Microplastics enter the environment and are difficult to degrade there. As a result, microplastics can also re-enter our food chain.
- Ethyl Tosylamide
Ethyl Tosylamide is a plasticizer used to make nail polish more flexible and durable. This chemical is restricted in some countries due to its potential antibiotic properties, as it could contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance.
- Rosin (Colophony)
Rosin is a resin obtained from coniferous trees. It is used in cosmetics to improve adhesion, for example, in eyelash glue or nail polish. It can lead to skin irritation and allergic reactions.
- Triphenyl phosphate (TPP)
Triphenyl phosphate is a chemical used in nail polishes to improve flexibility and durability. It can be hormonally active and potentially affect the endocrine system.
- Fragrances (synthetic perfumes)
Fragrances give products a pleasant scent. They can be synthetically or naturally produced. Many fragrances can be problematic for people with sensitive skin, triggering allergic reactions, skin irritation, and respiratory problems. Some fragrances are known to be endocrine disruptors.
- Cruelty-free / vegan
Manifix products (neither the individual ingredients nor the final product) have not been tested on animals. A vegan product contains no ingredients of animal origin. This means it is free from animal fats, gelatine, beeswax, honey, or other animal components.
Conclusion
I hope you are now a little more informed about what "15free" means and feel comfortable with Manifix products. From my point of view, there is still "room for improvement" in many areas of the cosmetic industry, but "15free" is a start, and it is moving in the right direction. It's great that Manifix is so innovative in this regard!
