Nail Fungus: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options
Hello! I'm Simi and I'm a pharmaceutical-technical assistant (PTA) by profession. I'm also a passionate MANIFIX Passionista. Since I've recently received several questions regarding nail fungus and the use of nail wraps, I'm now officially addressing this topic here. So, let's start: First, we need to understand what we're dealing with. Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a widespread condition that affects many people. Unsightly, bothersome, itchy, and contagious. But what exactly is nail fungus? It is an infection of the nails caused by various types of fungi. These infections can affect both fingernails and toenails. The most common symptoms are discoloration, thickening, and a brittle structure of the nails. Fungal spores are resilient and require strict and persistent treatment. Once a nail is affected, you can essentially re-infect yourself if the treatment is done incorrectly or not at all. But why is it important to recognize and treat nail fungus early? Untreated, the infection can spread and lead to serious problems, including pain and inflammation.
How is nail fungus transmitted and who is affected?
Nail fungus is contagious and can be transmitted through direct contact with infected nails or through contact with contaminated surfaces, such as in swimming pools or gyms. Who is particularly at risk? People with weakened immune systems, diabetics, and elderly individuals have a higher risk of developing nail fungus. Diabetics often struggle with dry skin anyway, including on their feet, sometimes leading to cracked calluses, for example, on the foot. This is not only painful but also a guarantee for fungal infections. Although "fungi" generally prefer moist environments, cracks in the calluses provide a good hiding place and are similar to a moist wound internally. Tight shoes and poor foot hygiene can also contribute to the development of nail fungus. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to your foot and nail care to minimize the risk of infection. Don't forget that our feet carry us through life.
Treating Nail Fungus: What are the options?
The treatment of nail fungus can vary depending on the severity of the infection. Common treatment methods include antifungal creams, tablets, and, in severe cases, surgical interventions. It is important to carry out the treatment consistently to completely eliminate the infection. After treatment, the question often arises: When and why should one use nail wraps? Nail wraps can be an excellent option to protect the nails during healing and simultaneously ensure an aesthetic appearance. They help protect the nails from external influences and can promote the growth of healthy nails. BUT! And this is important. If the nail fungus is widespread, the nail should be allowed to heal first. Here my PTA guiding principle applies: "doctor first, then customer" - which means the prescribed medication is always applied first, and then everything else you personally like in your routines. However, in cases of severely affected nail fungus, these options are not available. Here it is absolutely clear! First heal, then protect.
Prevention: How to prevent nail fungus
To prevent nail fungus, it is important to follow some simple hygiene measures. Keep your feet dry and clean, wear breathable shoes, and change socks regularly. Avoid walking barefoot in public swimming pools or showers, and make sure to trim and care for your nails regularly. If you already suffer from nail fungus, it is advisable to take the treatment seriously and follow the above prevention tips to avoid re-infection. Bathroom rugs must be thoroughly cleaned regularly. The same applies to towels. It is important to fight the spores vigorously in case of skin or nail fungus! If you file down the nail fungus to treat it, these tiny tiny particles will spread like wildfire throughout the room. And where do they settle? Exactly - very gladly in textiles. And yet, the nasty fungal spores don't stop at smooth floors. So, wash laundry at at least 60 degrees and clean the surface where you treated your nails with suitable disinfectants.
