Nail fungus

Nadine Lunge

Nail fungus affects so many

You are not alone with nail fungus, and many people don't know how to treat it quickly. If this applies to you too, please read on.

What is nail fungus?

Nail fungus is quite common on the feet, but can also occur on the fingers. It is caused by fungi that can spread under the nail. Symptoms can include discoloration, thickening of the nail, and brittle nails. It is important to get appropriate treatment to prevent it from getting worse. A nail fungus can lead to thickening, discoloration, and/or crumbling of the nails.

How does nail fungus develop?

Nail fungus develops because certain types of fungi, such as yeasts and dermatophytes, can penetrate the nail and multiply there. This often happens in environments favorable to fungi, such as moist and warm areas. Some factors that can promote nail fungus include:

  • Fungi love moist and warm environments, such as in shoes that do not ventilate the feet sufficiently, or in changing rooms. Here they can multiply quickly and also spread to unaffected nails.
  • Small injuries or cracks in the nail or on the nail plate can open the door for fungi.
  • A weakened immune system can increase susceptibility to nail fungus, as your body may not be able to effectively fight off the fungal infection.
  • Nail fungus is contagious, and you can get infected from infected people or from contaminated objects or surfaces. Especially in situations involving close skin contact or sharing nail tools.
  • Another possibility is genetic predisposition; some people may be genetically more susceptible to nail fungus than others.
  • One of the most common consequences of incorrectly applied nail polish on toenails is nail fungus. If nail polish is not applied correctly or if old polish residue is not thoroughly removed, bacteria and fungi can form under the polish and lead to a painful infection!

By minimizing these risk factors and practicing good foot hygiene, you can reduce your risk of a nail fungus infection.

What to do if you suspect nail fungus

If you suspect nail fungus, it's important to act quickly to prevent it from getting worse. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Consult a doctor:
A doctor can make an accurate diagnosis and recommend suitable treatment. Depending on the severity of the infection, this may include over-the-counter or prescription antifungals, medicated polishes, or other treatment methods.
  2. Good foot hygiene:
Keep your feet clean and dry. Use antibacterial soap and regularly change your socks and shoes to prevent further spread of the fungus. Important: dry your feet properly, including between your toes.
  3. Trim and file nails carefully:
Keep your nails short and clean. Use separate nail clippers and files for infected nails to prevent spread to healthy nails. Prevent nail injuries that could allow germs or bacteria to penetrate further or spread.
  4. Wear appropriate footwear:
Avoid shoes that are too tight or air-impermeable, which can retain moisture and promote fungal growth. Also wear appropriate shoes in swimming pools or other wet areas.
  5. Avoid contact with infected surfaces:
Be careful not to go barefoot in public areas such as changing rooms, swimming pools, or gyms. Also avoid sharing nail tools with others. Use different nail tools for already infected nails.
  6. Be patient:
Treating nail fungus can take some time and often requires patience and perseverance. Follow your doctor's instructions and carry out the treatment consistently.

If you follow these measures and seek medical help in good time, you can increase the likelihood of a full recovery and avoid further complications.

How is nail fungus treated?

  1. Medical treatments:
After a thorough examination and diagnosis, your doctor can prescribe various creams, gels, or polishes. These can then be applied directly to the affected nail. In more severe cases, your doctor may also prescribe medication that you will need to take for an extended period.
  2. Laser therapy:
The fungus dislikes heat, and laser treatment can help destroy the fungus by generating heat that kills it.
  3. Surgical removal:
In rare cases, surgical removal of the infected nail may be necessary to treat the fungus.

Manifix and nail fungus - is that possible?

No, nail fungus should be treated first. If you apply nail polish or nail wraps to a nail affected by nail fungus, you promote its growth and spread, as the fungus becomes compacted and has ideal conditions to grow even further under the layer. Please clarify with a doctor beforehand whether your nail is already "ready" for a manicure with our UV nail wraps.

If you have ever had nail fungus, it is important to dispose of all your nail polishes. This is because the fungus can survive in nail polish, and you will keep applying it to your nails and thus spreading it.

Why you should still wear our UV nail wraps

Our wraps are always gently removed with a natural oil. This automatically provides excellent care for the nail bed and the keratin layer. You get even more high-quality care included with our Remover based on Squalane. This way you can remove and care for them. No residue is left on your nail, unlike with nail polish. Our UV polish is only applied to the wrap and does not come into contact with your nail.

Finally, please, if you notice the slightest signs, have it checked and treated by a doctor or podiatrist to prevent worse things from happening.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.
