Pregnancy hormones cause nails (just like hair) to grow faster during pregnancy. However, they are often more brittle. Therefore, it is important to strengthen nails from the inside and outside. This also prevents cracks, which can be a gateway for bacteria.
Well-maintained nails also contribute to the well-being of pregnant women, who are already experiencing many physical and psychological changes.

What challenges do nails face during pregnancy?
Increased estrogen levels during pregnancy accelerate nail growth. However, this also makes nails thinner and more brittle. Progesterone, produced during pregnancy, also makes nails softer and more flexible, which increases the risk of cracks.
In addition, the unborn baby needs many nutrients for its development. Pregnant women are therefore particularly at risk of nutrient deficiencies, which may also become visible in their nails. A lack of iron, calcium, and biotin, in particular, makes nails more brittle.
How can I strengthen my nails during pregnancy?
Nutrition:
As so often, nutrition plays an important role in strengthening nails from within. Beans, legumes, and eggs are rich in protein and biotin. Biotin is known to strengthen nails. Whole grains contain a lot of zinc and copper, which give nails a beautiful natural shine. Carrots and sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, which is important for the function and structure of skin and nails. Nuts and avocados are rich in healthy fats (including omega-3 fatty acids) and vitamin E, which contribute to optimal nutrient absorption. This indirectly benefits nail health.
Nail care routine:
File your nails regularly to prevent breakage. Make sure to use a high-quality emery board or glass file.
To adequately moisturize your fingernails, you can use lipid-replenishing creams with panthenol, urea, allantoin, and bisabolol. For nail oil, I recommend almond, coconut, or olive oil. I am sure you already have at least one of these three oils in your kitchen. They penetrate deep into the nail, moisturize it, and contribute to faster regeneration. They also form a film on the nail, protecting it against external influences and dehydration.
Everyday life:
Avoid contact with chemical products as much as possible. This also includes aggressive nail polish removers with acetone.
When washing dishes or cleaning, I recommend wearing breathable protective gloves. This avoids direct contact between chemicals, which can also dry out your nails, and your nails.
UV nail wraps as a gentle alternative to shellac and gel nails
I recommend all pregnant women who like to wear beautiful nail designs to try UV nail wraps. Nail wraps are like stickers that you can apply perfectly to your nails. You press them firmly, then apply UV coat and cure them for 60 seconds under a UV lamp. The result is a flawless manicure in salon quality that lasts for several weeks.
The adhesive and stickers are free of harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, toluene, or dibutyl phthalate. The stickers are applied to clean nails. The nail plate does not need to be roughened. Removing the nail wraps is also gentle on the nails. They can be carefully peeled off with the help of a wooden stick. Nail polish removers with aggressive ingredients are not necessary.
