Nail Salon or DIY Nails: Which is the Best Choice for Healthy Nails?
Inhaltsverzeichnis
Anyone who wants beautiful, well-maintained nails often faces the decision: "Should I get my nails done at a nail salon or try to do them myself at home?" Especially with popular nail techniques like gel, acrylic, and nail polish, there are many opinions. As a pharmaceutical technical assistant, I often advise in the pharmacy, including frequently on skin, hair, and nail health. So that you can also benefit from this, in this post, I want to show you the advantages and disadvantages of these methods so that you can make an informed decision. Healthy and beautiful nails are not witchcraft.
Nail Salon vs. DIY Nails: What are the main differences?
A visit to the nail salon offers both professional and unprofessional advice. Perhaps this has happened to you before or you have heard about it. As with everything, there are sometimes negative as well as positive experiences. Assuming we can expect good advice, your salon visit means you have high-quality products on your nails. For DIY nails, on the other hand, you only need a few tools and can "work" flexibly at home. As I always like to say: no matter when, how, and where. As long as you don't do it at 30 degrees in the sunshine at the beach. ;-) Because the best and gentlest way to decorate your nails is with UV nail wraps. As the name already reveals, they cure in 60 seconds of UV radiation at only 6 watts. Therefore, avoid the sun with the DIY variant. Both variants have their advantages, but also risks, especially for the health of your nails. It is important to know the right technique and care to avoid nail damage.
Advantages and disadvantages of gel nails – harmful or not?
Pros:
- Long-lasting: Gel nails last up to three weeks.
- Large selection of colors and designs
- No DIY, optimal results (?)
- Unfortunately, not much else comes to mind right now :-(
Cons:
- Time-consuming
- Appointments not always available when needed
- Costly
- Removal: Peeling them off can damage natural nails if done improperly.
- Clumsy-looking nail
- Chemical ingredients: Some gels contain potentially harmful substances.
- Drying time: Requires special lamps, an extremely high wattage, usually around 40-70 watts, and expertise.
- Lack of oxygen, chemicals, fumes when inhaled, mechanical stress
- Hygiene: increased risk of nail and cuticle diseases, e.g., inflammations and fungal infections
Tip: For healthy nails, professional removal and care are important to avoid damage.
Why can gel nails from the salon be unhealthy or harmful?
A common reason is improper removal. If gel nails are forcibly scraped off, it can damage the natural nail plate, leading to weakening, cracks, or even nail loss. In addition, some gel products contain chemical substances that can cause allergies or irritations with prolonged or repeated use. UV light exposure during curing is also not entirely without risk, as frequent use can increase the risk of skin damage.
Acrylic Nails: Advantages and Risks
Pros: Very robust: Ideal for long, strong nails. Versatile: Allows for creative designs and reinforcements. Quick application: Can be done quickly in the nail salon. Cons: Chemical exposure: Acrylic contains monomer, which can be harmful if not used properly. Risk of allergies: Especially for sensitive individuals. Removal: Must be done professionally to avoid damage. Gentle is different. Note: Caution is advised with DIY acrylic applications, as improper handling can severely damage the nails. Don't trust "blindly" here.

Max. 6 watts for 60 seconds, almost unbeatable - Good elasticity for all lengths of your natural nails - No base coat required - UV polish (formerly UV Top Coat) and lamp are one-time purchase items, which speaks for sustainability. Polish lasts for about 12 applications, almost a year. My lamp is already 4 years old and still in great condition. - Travel-friendly, as small and compact - Nail salon ToGo with only 3 parts - Gentle removal without alcohol, with oils like sunflower, olive oil, or Manifix's remover oil based on squalane - Contact with water, including chlorine or salt water, does not affect the wraps - Hand disinfection is not a problem, nor is wearing gloves - Robust and protective for your nail Cons of Manifix UV Nail Wraps: - Limited durability: for nail wraps (lasts approx. 7 days with base and top coat. However, not! With UV nail wraps, which last at least up to 4 weeks without problems. - Application requires care: For an optimal result, clean and precise application is necessary. Mistakes during application can lead to bubbles or an uneven fit. Therefore, tip: Use accessories, such as the silicone hoof stick and check the application description. (Feel free to check my profile @manifixiert on Instagram) - Difficulty in removal: Removal can sometimes be difficult and damage the nails if done improperly. This is not a big deal as it only affects the top keratin layer. So proceed carefully. Some practice is required, as well as sufficient oil use. Conclusion: Make the right choice for healthy nails Whether in a nail salon or DIY - the choice of technique should always be tailored to the health of your nails. Gel and acrylic nails offer long-lasting results but pose risks to nail health if removed improperly. Nail polish is outdated, or in technical terms "obsolete". Avoid nail fungal infections, especially in summer. If the file etc. has not been properly cleaned of potential fungal spores, it can quickly spread to your fingernails and toenails (initially unnoticed). Consider the pros and cons yourself. Save time and money with Manifix UV Nail Wraps. Treat yourself to luxury without doing your nails yourself in 15 minutes. Then consciously visit a nail salon of your choice.
