Nail fungus is a super common topic – and yes, many try to hide it. But honestly, that's pointless; on the contrary, it only gets worse. Get help! I'm not just speaking from my own experience, but also from my daily life as a pharmacy technician – I've heard it all, and believe me: It's completely okay.
Nail fungus is an infection caused by various types of fungi. Typical signs include discoloration, thickened, or brittle nails.
What helps? Besides medical products, many also turn to home remedies like tea tree oil, vinegar, or garlic, as they have antifungal properties and can support healing.

Home remedies like vinegar (especially apple cider vinegar) can help because the acid creates an unfavorable environment for fungi. Tea tree oil is also known for its strong antifungal properties. It's important to apply them regularly and to take good care of your nails – that's the only way to achieve results.
Tea tree oil is one of the most well-known home remedies, so a quick word about it: It contains terpinen-4-ol, an active ingredient that can inhibit and kill fungi. It also has antiseptic properties and can reduce the risk of further infections.
My tip: Apply tea tree oil precisely with cotton swabs or a pipette, and wash your hands thoroughly before and after – nail fungus is stubborn and can spread further otherwise.
Very important: Be consistent and always seek additional advice from a pharmacy or doctor. Even if it looks better, the treatment should be continued for a longer period. Nail wraps can also provide additional protection.
What works sustainably against nail fungus?
Sustainability is also important for nail fungus – because the big question is: How can it be prevented from returning?
In addition to home remedies, proper care is particularly important: Keep your feet clean and dry, wear breathable shoes, and change your socks regularly. Hygiene is key – use your own towel and wash laundry at at least 60°C.
After successful treatment, good UV nail wraps can provide additional protection. They act as a barrier against external influences and help prevent new spores from settling in the first place.
When and why use nail wraps after treatment?
The use of nail wraps can quickly restore self-confidence after treatment. Affected individuals often suffer greatly, even if some people don't admit it. But I know better. UV nail wraps can quickly provide a well-groomed appearance after treatment. Of course, you should choose high-quality UV nail wraps! Preferably 15-free, so that no further damage can occur to the already very thinned nail.
For nail fungus, tablets containing the active ingredients terbinafine and itraconazole are primarily considered: Terbinafine is preferred when a nail fungus is caused by dermatophytes (so-called skin fungi), which is usually the case.
What happens if nail fungus is not treated?
Although nail fungus infections are not life-threatening, they should not be taken lightly. If the affected nail is not treated properly, there is a risk that the fungus will completely destroy it and also infect the neighboring nails.
How do I know if it's nail fungus?
Nail fungus can be identified by the affected nail losing its shine and exhibiting a white, yellow, or brown discoloration. The nail also frequently thickens or becomes brittle. The infection often starts at the front edge of the nail and progresses towards the nail plate.
